The 8472 mentions it here:

The spec goes something like:
In all KRPC messages, an optional "v" key is recommended, which contains a 4 byte value indicating the client and version. Existing "v" strings include "UTXX" and "ltXX", where XX is an unsigned short int representing the version or build number.
